Vernie worked for the railroad and at the Land O Lakes milk plant in Brainerd. he did stonework and made fireplaces. he was the caretaker and sexton for the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager for 40 years. He loved playing the banjo and fiddle, and was a member of the first Baptist church in Pillager.
